Election Tribunal dismisses suit seeking to sack LG Chairman in Rivers

The Rivers State Local Government Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Port Harcourt has dismissed a petition by the chairmanship candidate of Advance Democratic Congress, Bright Abali, seeking to sack Vincent Nwaobakata-Job as the Chairman of Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local area of the state.

Nwaobakata-Job was declared the winner of the April 17 local government chairmanship election for Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of the state by Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RISIEC.

The three-man panel led by Chief Magistrate Rita Oguguo in its judgment upheld the respondents preliminary objection that petitioner filed the suit out of the “thirty days” stipulated by the Local Government electoral law.

According to the panel, the petitioner was four days late in filing suit.

On the substantive matter, the tribunal held that the petitioner failed to prove his case and dismissed it for “incompetence”.

The panel also awarded the sum of N100, 000 against the petitioner in favour of the respondents.

Speaking to newsmen outside the courtroom, counsel to the petitioner, Innocent Eku expressed displeasure over the judgment and disclosed that he “has been instructed by his client to appeal it”.

However, counsels to the respondents declined to speak on the judgment.
