The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has told Governor Dapo Abiodun to appoint a substantive Rector for Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) Abeokuta.
BBNAIJA ONLINE” reports that MAPOLY is presently being run by Dr Adeoye Odedeji, who was appointed by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the Acting Rector in December 2019.
Odedeji became the Acting Rector following the appointment of the former Rector, Samson Odedina as a Commissioner in Gov Abiodun’s cabinet.
The State Government was said to have conducted interviews for candidates interested in becoming the Rector of the foremost Ogun polytechnic.
However, government has not taken a decision on who becomes the substantive head of the polytechnic, even as different groups lobby for preferred candidates.
At a press briefing in Abeokuta on Sunday, Ogun NANS Chairman, Damilola Simeon, charged Abiodun to do the needful by giving MAPOLY a befitting Rector.
Simeon alarmed that the delay in choosing a substantive Rector was hampering the development of the academic institution.
He alleged that the lack of a substantive Rector in the polytechnic had “slowed down its operation.”
The students body asked Abiodun to consider the most qualified candidate for the job.
While warning that due process be followed, the NANS leader said that he was aware that some are “running around to influence the process for their selfish and political gains.”
“We want to state categorically that, the leadership of NANS and NAOSS will resist any attempt by anyone individual to impose an unqualified and unpopular candidate as the Rector of the institution. We will not only fight against this, but also mobilise our students from all over the State in a protest and shutdown the State,” he threatened.
