Okada riders groaning under your excess levies – PDP’s Aderinokun tells Abiodun

A leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olumide Aderinokun, has alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun’s government was making life difficult for commercial motorcyclists in Ogun State.

The Akinruyiwa of Owu Kingdom asked the governor to consider the people before imposing any levies on Okada unions.

Olumide said he was baffled to see hundreds of okada riders on the streets of Abeokuta on Monday, protesting the excessive levies imposed on them by the transport unions.

”Aside from their daily fees, the riders said they had been mandated to pay N5,000 for reflective jackets and N2,500 for riders permit.

“These fees are making life unbearable for the okada riders in Ogun. I can feel their anguish. This is a time they are still struggling with the fuel price hike.

“I can recall that this same increase in ticket rate brought about a civil unrest in the state earlier this month, leading to the loss of lives and properties,” Aderinokun stated.

BBNAIJA ONLINE” reports that no fewer than two persons died in a clash that erupted in Ibese when okada unions increased the price of daily tickets.

In a chat with BBNAIJA ONLINE” on Tuesday, Aderinokun advised Abiodun to set up a review committee to look into the fees being charged by unions that collect levies on behalf of the state government.

“The governor can form a committee to review these fees because the people have shown that they are not happy with it. Also, the government can actually regulate the union’s activities.”

The Owu chief urged the state government to consider other means of generating revenue without putting untoward hardship on the masses.

He added that commercial motorcyclists should not be seen as touts or hooligans, but as individuals who have continued to contribute immensely to the economy of the state.

He asked the government to always carry the riders along before making decisions that have direct impacts on their welfare.

This, he opined, would put an end to protests by okada riders in the State.
